(DETROIT, Mich.) Veteran pitcher Jeremy Guthrie delivered the performance Kansas City needed to extend its win streak as the Royals edged the Tigers 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Guthrie, now 4-6 on the season, struck out nine batters while allowing one earned run on four hits. He's totaled 18 strikeouts in his last two starts combine.

The Royals (39-32) have now won ten consecutive games -- it's the club's first double-digit win streak since 1994.

Alex Gordon put Kansas City on top in the first inning. With two out and Eric Hosmer on second, Gordon hit a ground ball up back up the middle that hit second base and rolled into shallow right center field. Hosmer scored on the hit. Gordon increased his team-high RBI total to 39.

Omar Infante put the game out of reach with a solo home run in the fifth inning. He's belted two home runs against his former team in the series.

Lorenzo Cain also contributed a two-hit game to raise his batting average to .322.
