The Twins got the best of the Royals on the Fourth of July holding on to win 5-3.

Minnesota got big production out of Joe Mauer and Trevor Plouffe. Mauer put a charge into his fifth home run of the year in the three-run first inning. He added a double going 4-5 with two RBI. Mauer is hitting .272 this season with a .341 OBP.

Plouffe and Mauer combined to go 7-9 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.

The Twins smacked 13 total hits on Saturday including nine off starting pitcher Joe Blanton. Blanton exited the game after five innings. He allowed four earned runs and struck out four batters on the night.

The Royals struggled to get any production out of the five through nine holes. Those five spots combined to go 3-20 with five strikeouts.

The Royals (45-33) will look to split the series with a win over the Twins (43-38) on Sunday afternoon at 1:10.

Kansas City will send Danny Duffy (2-4, 5.44 ERA) to the mound to face former Royal Ervin Santana. Santana is making his first start of the season after being reinstated following an 80-game drug suspension.
