St. Joseph, MO--Todd Haley took the podium in front of a room full of reporters, ironically ingested a mouthful of Diet Coke, then explained that he and his staff have gone as far as Canada to find tip-top physical training methods.
"We just did a lot of research," Haley said. "Trainers calling Canadian Football League trainer's, and coaches calling Canadian coaches. They don't get a lot of OTA's and they don't get a lot of time in the offseason."
With the Chiefs first preseason game in less than a week, players and coaches are feeling a conditioning cram. The NFL Lockout's forced four months of offseason workouts to condense into a three-week span, turning training camp into a boot-camp conditioning timetable.
"Our guys aren't where we want them to be or where they will be, but overall our tempo's been pretty good."
Spectators at Chiefs Training Camp have seen the hands-on-hip effect infecting the entire field,espcially amongst late-arrivals like Justin Houston and Tony Moeaki; but the offensive and defensive line's are the top conditioning concern heading into the preseason. Defensive Lineman Wallace Gilberry's added weight purposely, but admits he's not in game-shape yet.
"Definitely not a full game," Gillberry said. "I definitely feel like I can contribute and hold my own however long they need me. It's going to take a while to get back in football shape. That's not something that happens in a week or even two weeks."
Kansas City will play its first preseason game on Friday, August, 13th at home against Tampa Bay.
