AAA estimates 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles to celebrate the holiday this year.
That's up more than four percent over last year, and the highest level since 2008.
AAA credits the upward projection with an improving economy, increased consumer spending and the recovering housing market.
Another factor that may affect the increase is the date of Labor Day this year, September 2.
According to AAA, Americans have shown a higher inclination to travel when the holiday falls earlier in the month.
