Atchison Police Mourn the Loss of Beloved K-9

The Atchison Police Department is starting the new year mourning. Their beloved K-9 died New Year's Day from a terminal medical condition. Officers are reflecting on their time with the pup, and remembering him for all of his hard work and dedication.
(ATCHISON, Ks.) The first day of January is a time where many shout "happy new year!"

For members of the Atchison Police Department, it was day where they said "rest in peace."

"Never one time did he not want to go to work. Even towards the end when he was starting to get sick. He was always wanting to go," said John Ross.

John Ross reflected on his time with his partner Bear who died on New Year's Day from kidney failure.

Bear was a member of the K-9 unit for Atchison Police Department.

He joined the team in 2008 and did a little more than your average pup.

He spent the last seven years chasing fugitives, finding drugs, and cracking down on many different cases.

"He was involved in the largest high-grade marijuana seizure the department ever made," said Mike Wilson.

That's just the beginning of Bear's accomplishments.

"Thousands of calls that he went on with us, and hundreds of criminal cases that he made, dozens of fugitives that he apprehended," said Wilson.

Chief Mike Wilson grieved for the loss of Bear, but said he feels the most pain for Ross.

"They were one. They were one unit. They were together for seven years on every call that came their way," said Wilson.

Those seven years make Bear the longest-standing K-9 in Atchison Police Department history.

That's one of the many reasons why officials said it will be tough to find another like him.

"Everything he did was perfect," said Ross.

"The K-9 unit will continue, but there was only one Bear and we will never be able to replace Bear," said Wilson.

A ceremony for Bear is set for Friday, January 10 at the Becker-dyer Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
