(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) For the second time in a week, a St. Joseph Mustang is leaving the team to pursue a career in Major League Baseball.
Relief pitcher Chris Green signed with the Baltimore Orioles organization Sunday night after the Mustangs 8-4 win over the Tulsa Cardinals.
Green says an Orioles scout approached him before getting on the team bus, and told him he liked his stuff. That was enough for Green who will be flying to Sarasota, Florida to join his new squad in the Gulf Coast League on Tuesday or Wednesday.
In his only season with the Mustangs, the hurler posted a 2.08 ERA with three saves. He struck out 15, while walking seven batters.
The Joplin native finished his career at Northwest Missouri State in the Spring. Green was a starting pitcher for the Bearcats, but he moved to the back end of the bullpen for the Mustangs this Summer.
Green says the Baltimore scout clocked his fastball at 96 miles per hour.
Just one week prior to the Orioles contacting Green, the Detroit Tigers reached out to catcher/right fielder Jordan Guida.
Guida is now with the Tigers organization in the Gulf Coast League.
