Bearcats Clinging to Tournament Hopes

A pair of losses to Central Oklahoma has Northwest Softball a half-game back of an MIAA Tournament berth.

(EDMOND, Okla.) It will take one last doubleheader for the Bearcats and Gorillas to find out who will be left out come Thursday.

Northwest Softball was swept by No. 21 Central Oklahoma 5-3 and 5-4 Sunday, putting them a half-game back of Pittsburg State for the eighth and final spot in the MIAA Tournament. The Bearcats (25-17, 13-13) have now lost five straight after winning five in a row.

Northwest will host Lincoln on Tuesday for a makeup doubleheader to finish the regular season. Pitt State hosts Central Missouri Monday.

The Bronchos (39-9, 23-3) grabbed a four-run lead in the first tilt Sunday and never looked back. They shelled Jenna Creger (12-9) for five runs on six hits. Jordan Ereth, Kristine Labertew, and Rachael Schmitz picked up Northwest's RBI in each of the final three innings, but couldn't close the gap further in the seventh.

The second loss went to Abbie Vitosh (8-6) as she also gave up five runs on five hits, while fanning four batters. Ereth crossed the plate in the first inning on an error, snagging a one-run lead for the Bearcats. They managed to grab a 3-1 advantage in the third, which ballooned to 4-3 with a Labertew run in the eighth.

UCO came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to overtake Northwest.

The Bearcats' series with Lincoln starts at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
