Big Inning Downs Bearcats in Tournament Opener

Northwest softball falls 5-0 in opening game of the MIAA Tournament on Friday.

(OVERLAND PARK, Kan.) The Northwest softball team had dropped their only two meetings with Central Oklahoma during the regular season by a combined three runs.

Friday, they met as the eighth and number one seeds in the MIAA Tournament. What began as a pitchers duel soon swayed to the Bronchos with one big inning as the Bearcats fell 5-0 in the opener.

The first 3 1/2 innings went scoreless as Jenna Creger and Kalynn Schrock combined for seven strikeouts. The scoring opened Schrock beat out a grounder to the shortstop, also loading the bases in the process.

Tori Collet then knocked the difference maker, knocking a bases-clearing double to the wall, growing the lead to four runs. The final run came in the fifth, when Ally Dziadula scored on a passed ball.

Shrock pitched a complete game, scattering just three hits while striking out nine. Creger surrender five runs on six hits, striking out four.

The tournament is double elimination format, so the Bearcats will face Northeastern State at 1 p.m. Saturday back at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex.
