(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) James Shields suffered his first loss since May 27th as the Royals fell 4-1 to Detroit on Sunday to just miss the series sweep.
A win would have cut the Tigers' (53-44) lead in the American League Central to five games. The Royals (45-50) were able to make up one game by taking two out of three in the series.
Shields (4-7) gave up solo home runs to Migeul Cabrera and Andy Dirks plus the first of Brayan Pena's two sacrifice flies. He lasted seven innings, giving up nine hits while striking out six.
Miguel Tejada replaced Chris Getz in the Royals' lineup after the second baseman suffered a left knee sprain on Saturday. He launched his third homer of the year in the second inning for Kansas City's only run.
Doug Fister (8-5) fanned five Royals, allowing six hits through six innings in the victory.
Kansas City hosts Baltimore Monday for the start of a three-game series.
