(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A one vehicle crash claimed the life of a northwest Missouri driver late Sunday night.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says they responded to the accident just before 11:00 P.M. Sunday night.

The accident happened when Damion J. Smith, 20, was traveling west on Missouri Highway 46 just outside of Maryville and lost control of his vehicle when going around a curve.  When the vehicle then went off the north side of the road, Smith overcorrected and went off the south side of the road where the vehicle ran into a bridge.

Smith was pronounced dead when first responders arrived on the scene.

One passenger, Jeffery A. Wooten, 21, was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Maryville where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Smith was not wearing his safety belt, while the Highway Patrol is still unsure if Wooten was wearing his.
