St. Joseph Lawmaker Calls for $2 Million to Repair Rosecrans Levees

Money would go toward repairing levees damaged by flooding in recent years. A state senator from St. Joseph fears another flood at Rosecrans could lead to the permanent closure of the Air Guard's 139th Air Lift Wing.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A state senator hopes other lawmakers in Jefferson City recognize the economic importance to St. Joseph of Rosecrans Airport and the 139th Air Wing of the Air Guard.

Senator Rob Schaaf has inserted $2 million into next year's state budget for levee repair work at the airport.

As economic pressures have forced the closure of many bases around the country, Schaaf fears another flood to the area would be the excuse some need to close the 139th for good.

"If Rosecrans should flood again, there is a great fear that they would just close it because of the cost of the clean up after the floods," Schaaf said. "The levees are still weakened from the first flood, not the last one."

The budget bill including the Rosecrans money advanced out of committee and will now be heard on the Senate floor.

Schaaf is hopeful the funding will not be pulled during the process.
