Andrew County Officials Hold Town Hall Meeting for Proposed Levy

Voters in August will vote on a proposed property tax levy that would improve the Sheriff's Department.
(COUNTRY CLUB VILLAGE, Mo.) Voters in Andrew County will decide on a 30-cent property tax levy in the August 5th election that could help improve the county's Sheriff's Department.

This evening, county officials held a town hall meeting in Country Club Village to answer questions and hear concerns.

County Commissioners say in recent years the Sheriff's Department has had to borrow money from the county's general funds.

They say the sales tax they have now does not provide enough revenue because of the limited amount of businesses in the county.

"The only raise they had was back in 1989 and they voted in a half cent sales tax which is not bringing in enough for revenue to run the Sheriff's Department," said Larry Atkins, Presiding Commissioner of Andrew County.

The county is holding four more town hall meetings in different locations around Andrew County.

Tuesday: 6:30 p.m., Avenue City School

Thursday: 6:30 p.m., North Andrew High School

July 31: 11:15 a.m., Andrew County Senior Center; 6:30 p.m., Savannah Middle School.
