Cardinals Draft Missouri Western's Schulze

The Cardinals select Michael Schulze in the 19th round.

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A stellar junior season at Missouri Western put shortstop Michael Schulze in the limelight, and the St. Louis Cardinals took notice as they draft the Lee's Summit native in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Schulze was named Division II player of the year by Daktronics, the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National College Baseball Writers' Association.

He led Missouri Western in 2013 with a .439 batting average in the lead off spot, scored a school record 70 runs, and drove in 49.

Schulze solid play led the Griffons to their first MIAA Regular Season Title and a program record 40 wins.

Through nine games with the St. Joseph Mustangs, Schulze is batting .412 with a homer and eight RBI.

The Cardinals are familiar with Schulze alma mater Lee's Summit West High School.

St. Louis relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal also attended LSW.
