Charges Lessened for Man Accused of Shooting His Own Son

Charges against Richard D. Vardy have been reduced from second-degree murder to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his son.
(PLATTSBURG, Mo) Charges against Richard D. Vardy have been reduced from second-degree murder to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his son.

Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Burris filed to lessen the charge on Tuesday at the Clinton County Courthouse.

Burris said the investigation is still on-going, however prosecutors believe based on the information they have received, these lessened charges are more accurate.

Vardy was charged last week after a domestic disturbance ended in the death of his son Richard J. Vardy and the shooting of his wife Mary.

Mary was shot in the head and was admitted to the intensive care unit at Liberty Hospital. She has since been released.

Vardy still faces felony charges of second-degree assault and armed criminal action.

He is still in custody of the Clinton Co. Jail, however his bond has also been reduced from $200,000 to $50,000. His next court date is March 13th.
