Crews arrived at the rest stop near Camden Point before 6:00 a.m. after learning of a trailer that was leaking organic hydrogen peroxide.
They closed the rest area as a precaution while they worked to clean the spill.
Authorities say it could have been much worse.
"The type of material that it was, we were able to leave the highway open but obviously had it been on the highway we could have had to close the highway down. We're always concerned about backing traffic up and getting secondary accidents involved," said Camden Point Fire Chief Walt Stubbs.
Traffic was not impacted.
The rest area has since re-opened.
