In his home debut against his former team, Alex Smith played throughout the first half. He completed 7 of 16 passes for 62 yards, with several passes being dropped. He was also sacked three times.
Kansas City's special teams continued to respond well to Dave Toub's system as Quintin Demps returned a kickoff 104 yards in the first quarter for the team's only touchdown. Devin Wylie also had a 52-yard punt return early in the third quarter, while Vince Agnew blocked an extra point attempt in the fourth.
Ryan Succop added field goals from 47 and 23 yards out to complete the Chiefs' scoring.
Rookie running back Knile Davis, filling in for an injured Jamaal Charles, led the Chiefs in rushing and receiving. The Arkansas product picked up 37 yards on 10 carries while hauling in three passes for another 31 yards.
Tight end Travis Kelce left the game in the first half with a knee bruise and will undergo an MRI on Saturday. Cornerback Dunta Robinson also left with an injured shoulder, but x-rays came back negative.
The team returns to practice on Sunday at the University of Kansas Training Complex in Kansas City.
