Chilli Scores 6 in the 6th to Pull Away from St. Joe

The Mustangs fall short Wednesday night despite another home run from Kris Koerper.

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) One bad inning for the Mustangs sunk them on Wednesday night as the Chillicothe Mudcats rolled to a 9-2 win.

St. Joe (8-6) surrendered six runs on five hits and one error in the sixth inning allowing Chilli to jump ahead by seven.

Mustangs starter Dixon Marble had only allowed three runs in the first five innings, but allowed two singles to start the sixth frame, and after a sacrifice bunt, another hit for Chillicothe.

Trey Gonsalez relieved Marble, but three more runs scored -- two of them charged to Marble -- before he was taken out for Blake Kolons still in the sixth inning.

St. Joe scored first on a RBI single up the middle from Payton Scarbrough to score Kyle Simpson in the second.

Chilli came back for one in the third and two in the fourth to open a 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs tried to start a rally in the bottom of the fourth when Kris Koerper cut the lead in half on a solo home run to right field, but that's where the scoring ended for St. Joseph.

Emilio Villanueva, batting in the lead-off spot in place of Michael Schulze moving on to the State College (Pa.) Spikes, went 2-4 with a walk to up his batting average to .474.

The Mustangs are back at Phil Welch Stadium Thursday night against Clarinda.
