Church Group Makes Prayer Quilts of Compassion

A group of women at Zion United Church of Christ volunteer to show they care about those in need.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Grieving families look for relief in sentimental possessions.

After natural disasters strike, sometimes the only security left to be found is in an item that holds emotional value - like a quilt.

"Even for someone that knew a person that had lost a limb in Iraq, we sent him a quilt.  We're up to 1,010 quilts now," said Marge Buescher.

Every Thursday morning the ladies of Zion United Church of Christ get together to make a symbol of comfort for those who need it the most. They make a quilt for every prayer request sent to their church.

"Sometimes the girls take things home with them to try to catch up, so we get everything," said Buescher.

The gift is much more than just warm fabric.  The blankets come with prayers from every member of the congregation.  Each prayer is marked by a tie on the quilt.

"When you say a prayer for someone that you don't even know, and these people receive this gift of a prayer, it's so rewarding," said Buescher.

The church gets positive feedback from their outreach of quilted prayers.

"Recently we had a circumstance happen that involved the quilts that is very remarkable and very rewarding," said quilter Lora Crowley.

While making blankets one day, a quilter saw her aunt's name on a prayer request.  She knew her aunt and mother had not spoken in years so she reached out to re-unite them.

"The lady that we made the quilt for has since died but that reconciliation of sorts would not have taken place if it hadn't been probably for the quilt, and we were real impressed with that," said Crowley.

The women do more than create quilts, they build compassion and strength for those who need it the most.
