City Preparing for Fans as Chiefs Camp Now Two Weeks Away

Local businesses are hoping good weather and a successful 2013 season will lead to an even better attendance at 2014 Chiefs Training Camp.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The countdown is on for the start of Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph.

In just two weeks, July 24, players will take the practice field at Missouri Western. Thousands of fans are expected to take it all in.

"We hope we see an increase because of wonderful weather we've had so far, knock on wood," said Beth Conway from the St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The season they had last year was incredible."

The Convention & Visitor's Bureau is gearing up for camp. Sales of training camp t-shirts will begin next week. They are getting the word out to local businesses to get ready to welcome guests.

"We're sending out all the information, it's a media blitz," Conway said. "We're sending out all the information to our VIP industry, our Visitor Industry Partnership and any other people we think would like to have a link to the camp guide that's going to be online, which is the all-encompassing guide for camp."

While locals enjoy going out to camp every year, businesses are ready to cash in on fans who are already calling with questions.

"Almost all the answers are from people out of town, like far away," Conway said. "They're driving from four and five hours just to come to camp this year. It's a fantastic experience. You can get very up close and personal with your favorite players. You can sit right along the sidelines."

There may be a little nervousness this year among local organizers. After this year, the Chiefs could choose to go elsewhere.

Their five year contract ends. There are five additional one-year deals that can be cancelled by either the team or Missouri Western. MWSU officials say they want the camp back in years to come and remain confident the Chiefs will agree.

"They (Chiefs officials) say that this is the best place with the customer service and what we provide to them is second to none," said Kurt McGuffin MWSU Director of Athletics. "What's nice about it is Coach Reid has been to other places and said this is the best place he's ever had it. That bodes well for us in the future."

The Chiefs have until the end of December to make their decision about camp for 2015.
