Community Takes Plunge to Benefit Baby Battling Cancer

Landon Shaw is battling a rare childhood cancer and now his community is helping raise money in his honor.
(TARKIO, Mo.) Five-month-old Landon Shaw is fighting for his life.

"He's the cutest baby and he's always smiling," said Conner Shaw, Landon's cousin and student at Tarkio High School.

Landon has a rare form of cancer that has spread rapidly. He's had a kidney removed and has a tumor on his brain.

"Through all of this, when I go and visit him he grabs your finger and you're with him. He smiles all the time and he's an adorable baby," added Shaw.

Now the community is rallying in support of Landon and his family.

Students at Tarkio High School say they will do anything, including jumping into freezing water to help Landon.

"It's the least I could do to help him get through what he's going through because nobody knows how hard it is to go through something like that. He needs all the support he can get," Jordan Riley said.

The students, along with the entire community, have created a unique way to raise money. It's called "Plunge for Landon." Once you plunge, you must post the video on Facebook, then challenge three others to do the same for a donation.

"It's just 30 seconds of cold compared to a lot of chemo that he's going to go through and that's just the least I could do," stated Max Graves.

The challenge has spread across the U.S. and #PlungeForLandon is now a trending topic on Twitter.

Dr. Patrick Martin, principal at Tarkio, says he's proud of his community and students for taking the plunge and helping Landon.

"This community always bonds together for the betterment of one of its people," Martin said.

Dr. Martin has one final challenge, "I'm going to make a singular challenge to one Congressman Samuel Graves. Congressman Graves, it's on you to find the water and get wet for Landon," added Martin.

The school will host a volleyball tournament for Landon, Sat. April, 5 at 8:00 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. The fee is $100 per team. To register, call Keisha Williams at 660-623-0710 or Winter Owens at 816-244-0827.

A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be held at 5 p.m. in the Tarkio Elementary Cafeteria. Tim Clark will perform.

Donations can be mailed to Flower Mill, 606 Main St., Tarkio MO, 64491. A PayPal account has also been set up Landon at teamlandon102113@outlook.com
