Conception Seminary College Basketball: Shear's Journey to Conception Junction

Skip Shear has worked at every level of college basketball, and now he's applying his knowledge to seminarians.
(CONCEPTION JUNCTION, Mo.) Skip Shear has been both a teacher and student of basketball since his college days.

His first job was on legendary coach Bob Knight's staff at Army. After taking a job at Appalachian State, Shear reunited with Knight at Indiana as a graduate assistant. He then found his way to Missouri, working at Tarkio College, Drury, and William Jewell.

Shear preceded Tom Smith as the men's head coach at Missouri Western from 1982-1989. He then joined Steve Tappmeyer's staff as a volunteer assistant at Northwest in the mid-90s. It was shortly after he was hired as the new Director of Wellness at Conception Abbey.

Along with giving physical fitness test to all seminarians, he was recruited to coach the Conception Seminary College basketball team. The group, different than any Shear has previously led, competes in one tournament a year, held in Columbus, Ohio before moving to Chicago in the early 2000s.

The team spends several months preparing for this one event, and it's that process that has shown Shear how unique the job is.
