Council Approves Downtown Housing Plans

Phase 1 of "The Quarters" will feature 19 homes built on land from 7th - 9th Street between Faraon and Roubidoux.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The St. Joseph City Council on Monday approved final plans for the first phase of The Quarters housing project downtown.

A total of 19 homes will be built in the area from 7th to 9th Street between Faraon and Robidoux as part of the downtown St. Joseph's Uptown redevelopment project. This is on the site of Heartland Health's old downtown campus.

Developers say two homes have already been sold even before being built.

Lead project developer Tim Minson admits construction has been slow because of the weather, but says everyone will really start noticing changes by this summer.

"It's a unique project," Minson said in a report to council members. "Sometimes you have to think outside the box. We are getting a lot of good feedback from our work group. We are putting a better product in the ground and everyone will be impressed with it."

There had been some original controversy about the types of homes that would be built on the land. Local preservationists wanted to be sure that the designs of the houses would fit into the style of the historic neighborhood.
