Council Delays Vote on $27,000 Security Upgrade

Vote postponed to give council members time to review bids and details of proposed system for Parks and Rec Department
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The cost of a security upgrade was questioned at Monday night's St. Joseph City Council meeting.

Council members decided to postpone a vote on a $27,000 security and surveillance system for the Parks and Rec Department.

Council member P.J. Kovac asked to delay the vote for two weeks to give council members more time to review the bids and details of the proposed system.

The upgrades include cameras and motion detectors for five maintenance buildings on Grand Avenue.

During the winter months, the Parks and Recreation Department had multiple break-ins where thieves stole tools and equipment.

Assistant Director Bill France said those break-ins have just about forced them to do something.

"Actually with the way times are being now, it has become necessary that we do this," he said.

France said the department has also had some vandalism in past months.

He hopes the upgrades will help them recover some of their losses from these incidents.

The funding for the upgrades will come from gaming revenues that were allotted for the department.
