(St. Joseph, Mo.)  It was an unexpected start to the school year for St. Joseph's superintendent at Monday night's Board of Education meeting.

Dr. Melody Smith received a surprise double honor - awarded both the "Above and Beyond Award" and the "Patriot Award."

Dr. Smith was recognized by the St. Joseph School District and Department of Defense for her work with military families in the schools.

The "Above and Beyond Award" recognizes those who have gone beyond the legal requirements for providing support for military families and is given on a limited basis.

Dr. Smith received the ''Patriot Award" after being nominated by the spouses of two soldiers who have been deployed overseas, Mrs. Jennifer Halter and Dr. Jeanette Westfall, both District employees.

Dr. Smith has been an advocate for a policy change that guarantees a smooth transition for military kids who transfer from school to school.
