(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A pair of former Missouri Western Griffons and St. Joseph Mustangs sign contracts sending them to the minor leagues.
Daktronics and ABCA National Player of the Year Michael Schulze made the call Wednesday agreeing to terms with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. The Lee's Summit native will join the State College (Pa.) Spikes -- St. Louis' Class A Short-Season team.
Schulze will arrive at State College in time for the team's home opener on June 17th.
He will join his best friend from childhood, and the Cardinals 9th round pick from Missouri State, Nick Petree with the Spikes. Schulze also played for a season at Lee's Summit West High School with St. Louis setup man Trevor Rosenthal.
Tino Martinez D-II Player of the Year Finalist Grant Fink signed his contract to join the Cleveland Indians organization on Tuesday. Fink is being sent to the Arizona League Indians, the club's rookie team.
Schulze was a 19th round draft pick by the Cardinals in Saturday's first-year player draft, while Fink went to the Indians just four rounds later. It marks the first season since 1973 for two Missouri Western players to be taken in the same draft.
Behind Schulze program-high .439 batting average and Fink's record-tying 14 home runs, the Griffons won a single-season record 40 games in 2013.
