Former Health Director to Run for City Council

Current council's handling of smoking issue tipping point for Mary Attebury
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Local debate over the smoking issue has been one of the tipping points in a St. Joseph woman's decision to run for St. Joseph city council.

Mary Attebury, currently the chief operating officer at the Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center, says she is soliciting signatures to get her name on the ballot.

Attebury says she was frustrated with how the current city council handled the smoking ban debate.

"It felt very disingenuous at the very last meeting," Attebury said. "With overwhelming support and the same amount of people coming out in non-support and multitudes coming out in support for the council, they simply disregarded it."

Attebury will run for the 5th District seat currently held by Barbara LaBass. Attebury had previously been the director of the city health department.

Primary elections are scheduled for February.
