Gehrs Works through Shaky Start, Downs A's

Kyle Gehrs recorded his second win of the season Thursday night.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Clarinda scored twice in the first two innings on one hit, two errors and four walks, but Kyle Gehrs settled in from that point on as the Mustangs (8-3, 4-3 MINK) topped the A's 4-2 Thursday evening.

The former Central Missouri pitcher gave up two hits and two walks in the final 5 2/3 innings of his start to lock up a second win in as many starts. Gehrs used 154 pitches to strike out ten batters through 7 2/3 innings.

"I just started pitching backwards. My curveball was on. I was throwing it for a strike, able to get my slider across. Just competing was the main thing."

The bulk of Gehrs' run support came in the bottom of the first.

Ryan Abernathy reached on a one-out single and scored two pitches later on Mike Sherburne's second triple of the summer. Sherburne crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 2-1 Mustangs.

Zac Johnson added some insurance scoring Joe Koerper from third on a two-out hit in the first.

Sherburne scored again in the seventh as Koerper drove in his third RBI of the season.

Brett Ash shut the door for his fifth save in five tries pitching a scoreless ninth. The closer has only allowed two hits and no runs to keep his ERA at a perfect 0.00.

St. Joseph plays a non-league game Friday evening against the Mustangs Alumni.
