The house was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.
Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen throughout the downtown area.
The home quickly became engulfed and multiple crews were called out.
Authorities say it took nearly two hours to get the fire under control.
The home was not occupied. The owner had two vehicles stored inside.
"We didn't send anybody in. Our main concern was protecting the exposure on the east side and then setting up two ladder trucks to put the fire out that way because we're not going send anybody inside," said Boyd Alldredge, acting battalion chief for the St. Joseph Police Department.
