Local Couple Holds 1st Wedding at Phil Welch Stadium

Jeff and Kaiti Lawrence exchanged vows at home plate Friday evening
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Phil Welch Stadium's held its share of memorable baseball games, and even a boxing match. But the venue added to its history once again Friday evening.

Phil Welch became a wedding chapel for the first time.

Savannah natives Jeff Lawrence and Kaiti Tucker tied the knot at home plate in St. Joe's historic stadium.

The groom grew up loving the game of baseball, and played the sport in high school. For the ceremony, the St. Joseph Mustangs provided a jersey for Jeff with his old playing number -- five -- on the back, as well as a team hat.

Despite playing the game throughout his life, he'd never been quite as nervous on a diamond as he was Friday.

"I had some games where I was pretty nervous, but this tops all of it," Jeff said. "My legs were shaking. That was a first."

As the bride and groom walked off the field after exchanging vows, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" played over the stadium's sound system giving the wedding a fitting end.

Kaiti was happy to have a baseball themed wedding, because she knew it was important to Jeff.

"It means a lot to him to have it here as far as being close to family and baseball."

Kaiti will get the traditional wedding every bride hopes for. The couple will hold another ceremony in a church on April 18, 2015.
