Joe Drake resigned his position as Maryville Head Wrestling Coach earlier this week after leading the program for 40 years. He cited the four decade mark being a "nice round number" on which to end his career.
The Iowa native came to Maryville in the early 70s to continue his collegiate wrestling career at Northwest Missouri State. He immediately took the head wrestling position at the high school following graduation for the 1974-1975 season, becoming just the fourth head coach in the program.
He amassed a state record 413 dual wins along with 14 conference champions and 18 district titles. He was named district coach of the year 13 times and served as the president of the Missouri Wrestling Association for two years.
He coached 76 state qualifiers and boasts 15 state champions. He took five wrestlers to his final trip to Columbia last month and coached junior Brendan Weybrew to a runner-up finish in the 285-pound class in his final match.
The Spoofhounds finished second in the state as a team in 1985.
