MDC Stressing Safety for the Holiday Weekend

National statistics show 79% of those killed in boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) With a holiday weekend approaching, the Missouri Department of Conservation is stressing safety to people planning to spend time on the water.

AAA Travel estimates that 36.1 million people are taking a trip for Memorial Day weekend, and in Missouri, the lake is a prime destination.

Conservation agent Adam Arnold says to make sure your boat has life jackets -- which are required by law -- before hitting the water, and children under the age of seven are required to wear life jackets unless they're in the cabin of a house boat or cruiser.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's website, national statistics show 79% of those killed in boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket.

Arnold has more safety tips in the video above.
