Jeffrey Ferguson, 59, was lethally injected just after 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday morning at a state prison in Bonne Terre, marking the state's fifth execution since November.
Ferguson was convicted of abducting and killing 17 year old Kelli Hart on February 9, 1989 after she ended her evening shift at a metropolitan St. Louis gas station.
Attorneys for Ferguson filed last minute appeals to Governor Jay Nixon, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing the controversial drug pentobarbital could cause pain and suffering for the convict.
The state's next execution is set for April 23 when William Rousan, convicted of killing a St. Francois County couple in 1993, is scheduled to be put to death.
