The Legislature passed House Bill 1063 on Thursday that would make jumping jacks the official exercise of the state.
The bill has been promoted by students at Pershing Elementary here in St. Joseph for several years.
St. Joseph Senator Rob Schaaf led the bill in the Senate.
“I am so pleased that this legislation has passed,” Sen. Schaaf said in a statement. “The first group of fourth grade students who really pushed for this legislation are still following it as ninth graders, and I am sure hearing the jumping jack was named the official state exercise made their day.”
Current fourth graders at Pershing attended the session in Jefferson City on Thursday.
The school is named for General John Pershing who is credited with inventing the exercise in the late 1800's.
It will now move to the governor for approval.
