(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Just as the heat settles in here in northwest Missouri, some are looking ahead to winter.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is already starting the task of filling seasonal snow plowing jobs.

MoDOT has openings for emergency snow plow operators. Applicants must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma and a commercial driver's license.

The hours for snow plow operators vary. The pay ranges from $13.82 per hour to $15.63 per hour depending on experience.

MoDOT treats nearly 34,000 miles of state roads during the winter months, so they're trying to plan ahead now for whatever the season may bring.

"It's time to work on the winter battle plan that will help get travelers back on Missouri roadways as quickly as possible," said MoDOT State Maintenance Engineer Beth Wright. "During the fall, crews will inspect equipment, make necessary repairs, review snowplow routes, and refresh their skills with training. We need to fill all of our vacancies in maintenance now to be ready for the winter."
