The St. Joseph Police Department and Buchanan County Sheriff's Department responded to the home in the 2500 block of Jules Street shortly before noon.
According to Cmdr. Janice Rothganger, a man inside the home showed a knife when officers arrived and told them he did not want to go to jail. As police talked to the man, Rothganger said he grabbed another knife.
The St. Joseph Police Department requested back-up at the home, bringing in an armored vehicle as a precaution. An ambulance was also at the scene.
The man eventually surrendered to police. He was taken into custody for a psychiatric evaluation.
"A domestic violence call can go this direction any time," said Cmdr. Rothganger. "Usually, they're resolved very quickly with an arrest. It's not very often that somebody displays such an aggressive means to not go to jail."
The street was closed in the area while police negotiated with the man inside the home, but it has since reopened.
