The district is one of three in Missouri to be recognized with a Best Communities for Music Education designation.
The honor went to the St. Joseph School District because of its ongoing effort to include music education as part of the core curriculum.
Those close to the program say the honor is the result of a lot of teamwork.
"It's obviously great confirmation of the hard work that our students put in daily, the work that our teachers do, their dedication and commitment in the classroom and outside the classroom and also our administrators for the financial and moral support that they give us, the support that they give us in scheduling," said Kevin Griffin, secondary fine arts coordinator.
The award covers the entire district.
Griffin added that this recognition opens the door for other opportunities through the National Association of Music Merchants, including scholarships.
