(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The Mustangs dropped a third consecutive game 9-3 to the Chillicothe Mudcats on Wednesday.
St. Joe's road losses Monday and Tuesday came in the final at-bat of those games, but Chilli was able to grab a big lead and hang on to it.
The Mudcats scored in the first inning, three more in the second, and four more in the fourth to open a 8-2 deficit.
The Mustangs (26-18) tried to make a charge in the third inning. Eric Swain and Jeremy Monty reached on singles, and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Lucas Powers. Brandon Huske followed with a line drive to Chilli second baseman Tanner Bily. Bily got a force out at second, but Swain was able to cross for St. Joe's first run.
Later in the inning, Huske was caught stealing second base, but it allowed Monty to come home from third to cut the Mudcats lead to 4-2.
Colton Howell took the loss giving up eight earned runs on ten hits in 3 2/3 innings, raising his ERA to 9.87.
St. Joseph received 4 1/3 scoreless innings from reliever Jace Anderson. He gave up just one hit and struck out two. It's Anderson's longest outing of the summer.
Joe Koerper went 3-4 at the plate in the loss. He has five hits in his last two games.
Monty, Powers and Zac Johnson all added two hits in the game, but the Mustangs stranded seven base runners.
The Mustangs are three games back of the North division leading Clarinda A's. St. Joe hosts Clarinda at Phil Welch Stadium Thursday.
