Norma L. Spencer, 76, St. Joseph, Missouri died Monday, March 31, 2014 at a local healthcare facility.

She was born July 17, 1937 to John and Lillie (Alexander) Cohrs in Gallatin, Missouri.

Norma attended Jameson, Missouri grade school through the 9th grade. She attended high school in Randall, Iowa, Stewartsville, Missouri, and finished her Junior and Senior years at Osborn, Missouri, graduating with the class of 1955. Norma was a star basketball player who played the position of center guard. She later attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska. While there she gave her life to the Lord at the age of 18 at the 1st Christian Church.

Upon returning home, she went to work for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. It was on a weekend visit home that she met Dennis on a blind date. After a weekend of romance of 11 months, they were married on August 18, 1956 at the 1st Christian Church in St. Joseph, Missouri.

They lived in Clarksdale renting a home until 1959 when they purchased a farm. A good place to live but not large enough to support a family, Dennis continued to work at Quaker Oats. In 1957 their first son, Dennis W., was born. Later in 1958 son Steven was born and in 1962 Alan. Out growing their small house, they applied for an FHA loan and was approved in 1968. It was one of the happiest days of her life.

Norma was a stay at home mom. She also raised a large garden, canned to help feed the family, and painted every building on the farm including the new house inside and out. After the boys were in school, she would take on part-time jobs such as painting the school gym, managing the Lions Club Café, and cooking for its members. She worked three days a week at Arnold’s Grocery for eight years and ran the Clarksdale Café until the bank closed. By that time the school had already closed so there wasn’t much left of the small town.\

In 1987 a 50 year old grandmother went back to school. Always liking to mess with hair, she enrolled in the St. Joseph Beauty University and graduated with a perfect attendance. She later opened the “Back Door Salon” in her home where she worked part-time.

Norma was a member of Central Christian Church and Treasurer of St. Joseph Evening Garden Club. In her spare time she enjoyed her yard and flowers, gardening with her cousin, Donna, reading, and playing cards with friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Alan.

Survivors: husband, Dennis, St. Joseph, Missouri; sons, Dennis W. Spencer, Clarksdale, Missouri and Steven Spencer, St. Joseph, Missouri; two grandchildren, Jamie Bailey (Shane) and Kristin Kungler (Blaine); and three great-grandchildren.
