(JOPLIN, Mo.) The Northwest women's basketball team looked poised to knock off Missouri Southern on the road Wednesday night, but the Lions battled back in overtime to pull out a 64-60 win.
The Bearcats (9-13, 6-9 MIAA) led for a 31 minute stretch in regulation and were up by four with 1:20 left in the extra period, but couldn't close out the Lions either time.
Shelby Mustain had 13 points for Northwest in the loss, and Annie Matthews added 12 point and 10 rebounds.
Northwest an 11-point first half lead and were up by five at the break after shooting 56.5-percent from the field, but that trend fell off in the second half. The 'Cats were just 5-25 in the second half only scoring 19 points.
The loss snaps a season-high four-game win streak for Northwest.
Northwest men 68, Missouri Southern 82
(JOPLIN, Mo.) Missouri Southern jumped ahead of Northwest at the 18:10 mark in the first half and didn't look back as the Bearcats ten-game win streak was snapped in a 82-68 loss.
The Lions extended its lead to 18 points in the first half. The 'Cats (18-6, 13-2 MIAA) clawed back within seven early in the second half, but they couldn't keep up with Southern's pace.
The loss trims Northwest's lead in the MIAA standings to just one game over Central Missouri, and two over Missouri Southern.
Bearcat senior Deshaun Cooper hit the 1,500 point mark Wednesday evening. He finished with 22 points. Dillon Starzl was the only other Bearcat in double-digits with 11 points.
Northwest's only other conference loss came January fourth against Central Oklahoma. Their next game is coming February 19th in Maryville against Lindenwood.
