Now, one of the best to don a Bearcats uniform will continue his career overseas.
Cooper signed a contract on Wednesday to play for Hertner Loewen of the German Pro B League, the second highest level in the country. He's the third player to sign a professional contract under head coach Ben McCollum.
"They like to run a lot of ball screen offenses and I'm a ball screen guy," he said. "I like to get out and run in transition sometimes. They're willing to cope with me and build around me, so I can't pass up that opportunity."
Cooper said he received the offer last week through his agent. He'll leave for Germany on August 20th and begin the season in September. His contract lasts until March.
The St. Louis native was essential in the resurgence of Northwest basketball, leading the Bearcats to a co-MIAA Regular Season Championship and a Sweet Sixteen berth last season. He barely missed on a half-court shot that would have beaten eventual National Champion Central Missouri.
Name the MIAA Player of the Year and an NABC All-American his senior year, Cooper finished his career fourth on the school's career scoring list (1,702), second in assists (489), and third in three-pointers (170).
He admitted he knows little about the league or the level of competition, but it's not a concern.
"It's not about the level they're at. It's about the level that I play at. So, if I can take my game over there to the level that I know I'm capable of playing at, then I'll be perfectly fine."
