The Joint Committee on Transportation Oversight passed a proposal to rename part of the Belt Highway after Walter Cronkite.
Cronkite, one of the nation's most well known journalists, was born in St. Joseph.
The proposal renames the stretch of the Belt from Frederick Avenue south to I-29 as the Walter Cronkite Memorial Highway.
The proposal was sponsored by State Representative Delus Johnson.
"I appreciate the staff of Missouri Western for bringing this proposal forward and I was very happy with the legislature's quick action to approve the application," said Rep. Johnson. "This is a great way to pay respect to the person known as "the most trusted man in America"."
Rep. Johnson said signs should be in place on the Belt Highway within six to eight weeks.
