Police Investigate Extensive Damage at Plaza 8 Theater Building

Ceiling tiles in the main lobby were torn out and shattered. Debris covered the floor of the lobby as well. Two theaters were also trashed.
(ST. JOSEPH) Just two days after a St. Joseph movie theater closed, the facility has been trashed.

The St. Joseph Police Department sent officers to Screenland Plaza 8 located at 2219 N. Belt Highway Tuesday where they found extensive damage inside.

Ceiling tiles in the main lobby were torn out and shattered. Debris covered the floor of the lobby as well.

Josh Hall, who managed the facility, said at least one theater was "obliterated." Another theater was also damaged.

The facility's bathrooms had broken mirrors and other damage. Empty alcohol bottles were also found in the theater.

Hall said the damage likely happened overnight Sunday into Monday. Police were notified Tuesday morning.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said his officers were still at the theater Tuesday afternoon investigating.

An officer on the scene said the damage was estimated at several hundred thousand dollars.

Police are still trying to figure out the circumstances surrounding the damage.

The theater officially closed to the public on Sunday. A Price Chopper grocery store is planned for the site.

Hall said some of the theater seats and other items inside Plaza 8 were going to be sold as part of a public auction.
