Pumpkin Mountain Lighting Kicks off Pumpkinfest

Great weather and big crowds help kick off annual celebration at Pony Express Museum
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)Pumpkin Mountain is lit once again for the start of another Pumpkinfest at the Pony Express Museum.

With nice weather holding out Friday night just long enough, it was a good crowd for the lighting of the pumpkins.

Organizers guess there are between 850-1,000 pumpkins up on the mountain this year. That's fewer than previous years only because the pumpkins this year are bigger.

It is a long process getting from pumpkin seed to a place perched up on the mountain.

"They start early in the summer planting the pumpkins," said Cindy Daffron, executive director of the museum. "And then they start a week ahead pulling them out of the field.putting them on the trailers. Monday we started delivering to the local schools. Tuesday we started carving. Today we were done by 3:30 p.m. The best record ever so far."

Students from area schools carved the pumpkins. The festival continues Saturday with a full day of food, music, entertainment and fun.
