According to a new report by the National Resource Defense Council, many people in the U.S. are using inefficient dryers.
They use as much energy annually as energy efficient clothes washers, dishwashers and refrigerators combined.
The environmental group says Americans spend nine billion dollars a year to operate dryers.
A scientist from the group says electric dryers should be updated to more efficient heat pumping models sold mostly in Europe.
U.S. energy standards for dryers have only been updated three times since 1970, according to the report.
