First-year head coach Chad Smith is suspended from his duties with the team indefinitely.
Smith was arrested on August 4th for driving while intoxicated in Platte County.
The Savannah School District released this statement on Smith's suspension:
"Mr. Chad Smith, Savannah High School football coach has been indefinitely suspended from his coaching duties as of September 21, 2012, due to violations of the Savannah R-III School District 'Coaching Code of Ethics.' In upholding the citizenship standards for Savannah High School athletes and our coaches, Mr. Smith will be considered eligible for return once citizenship standards and guidelines have been deemed met by district administration.
Mr. Bryson Byergo will serve as interim Head Coach for the Savannah High School football team."
According to the Savannah Reporter, Smith attended a Kansas City Royals baseball game the night of his arrest.
The Savage football team moves forward without its head coach tonight with a road game against Benton.
Smith was hired as head football coach after Mark Cole's resignation in the off-season. The Savages are off to a fast start in 2012 with a 4-0 record.
