School to Build Outdoor Reading Space

Parkway Elementary received a $5,000 grant from Lowe's to build an outdoor reading space.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Students at a St. Joseph school will soon have an outdoor place to read.

Parkway Elementary received a grant for $5,000 to build the outdoor reading garden.

The "Toolbox for Education" grant is a national grant awarded by Lowe's.

5th grade teacher Laura Stites worked with the school's PTA and wrote the grant.

Students are already excited the project and a new place to enjoy reading.

"I think it's more important now than it's ever been because the prevalence technology is so large and a lot of students would much rather grab an iPad, laptop or other technology instead of picking up a book, says Stites.

Parkway plans to convert the front median in front of the school into the outdoor reading area.

A committee is working to design the area

The school plans to begin work on the area in the spring and have it completed this fall.
