Second 'Battle at the Ballpark' Draws Another Big Crowd

Over 1,300 came to Phil Welch Stadium on Friday for a 14-bout card.
(ST. JOSEPH) Over 1,300 people came through Phil Welch Stadium on Friday night for the second "Battle at the Ballpark", billed as the largest boxing event in the state's history.

The initial 19-fight card was whittled down to 14 bouts after several scratched and did not set a Missouri record. The night featured two title fights that saw WBC Cruiserweight Champion Olanrewaju Durabola retain the belt with a second-round knockout of Max Heyman.

Former Missouri Western basketball player Ashleigh Curry also defeated Melisenda Perez in their fourth meeting via sixth-round decision to close the night.

St. Joseph Mustangs owner Dan Gerson said the success of last year's event plus its uniqueness convinced the team to bring it back.

"The more people we can expose Phil Welch to, it's good for the city and good for everybody," he said. "I've always said to the promoters that as long as they do things the right way, as long as it's a good event and everybody has a good time, we would love to continue to do this."
