SJSD Legal Fees Mounting

With an FBI investigation and a state audit in progress, legal fees for the St. Joseph School District will be over budget for the year.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)   With many issues surrounding the St. Joseph School District, it might not come as a big surprise that they will probably spend more on legal fees for the year.

With two months left in their fiscal year, the district is almost at 100 percent of what was budgeted.

Latest figures show the district has spent $51,000 on legal fees for the school year so far. They budgeted $52,000 for the year that ends June 30.

Not included yet are any fees that will go toward St. Louis attorney Tom Mickes, who the district reached out to after the FBI began investigating the district earlier this month.

While school officials say they will pay some of Mickes' fees, they add that much of his work will be covered by their insurance.

The FBI began an investigation into the schools after it became public that Superintendent Fred Czerwonka had improperly awarded more than $250,000 of stipends to chief administrators without board approval.
