Smith Moves from Basketball to Tennis at Western

Former men's basketball coach Tom Smith takes over as head women's tennis coach at Missouri Western
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) After recording 618 wins on the hardwood, former men's basketball coach Tom Smith will try few more wins on a different kind of court.

Missouri Western announced Friday morning that Smith will take over as the new head women's tennis coach.

Northwest Missouri State alumnus Raven Searcy will aid him as the Griffons graduate assistant. Smith replaces former tennis coach Ron Selkirk.

"I certainly do no profess to have the expertise that Coach Selkirk has, but what I can bring to the table is 46 years of coaching experience at the college level," Smith said in a press release.

Smith coached basketball for 38 years, 25 at Missouri Western, and was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame in June.

The Griffons went 6-16 in 2013, and have just three conference wins in the last two seasons combine.
