(CNN) State lawmakers are taking President Obama's advice and not waiting on Congress to raise the minimum wage.

Hawaii's state legislature approved a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over the next few years.

Maryland lawmakers are also considering a proposal to increase the state's minimum wage to $10.10.

And negotiations are under way in Minnesota that could raise the minimum wage there to $9.50 an hour.

Cities like Chicago and Seattle are also pushing for change.

In his State of the Union address, President Obama urged mayors, governors and state legislators to take action into their own hands.
